A wedding is often a whirlwind of emotions and a lot of planning. From choosing the venue to logistics and unexpected surprises, every detail matters to make sure your big day is unforgettable. But what do you do when you're getting married in a tropical climate, with guests coming from near and far? Some mistakes can quickly complicate things, so it's better to avoid them from the start!

1. Underestimating the weather

☀️ If you live locally: You know the climate, but have you thought about your guests' comfort? A wedding under the hot sun can quickly become exhausting. Plan for shaded areas, refreshments, and consider adjusting the timing of the ceremony.

☀️ If you’re coming from afar: Make sure to check the season. While the rainy season typically lasts from June to November, the dry season can also bring surprises with high temperatures and intense sun. Be sure to adjust your clothing and plan your day accordingly.

2. Neglecting guest organization

✈️ If you live locally: You may be at home, but your guests might be traveling from another island or region. Help them out by providing information on accommodations, transport options, and maybe even a little guide to the must-see spots on the island.

✈️ If you’re coming from afar: Your loved ones will have to manage a full trip to attend your wedding. Make it easier for them by securing accommodations, organizing shuttle services, and informing them about necessary paperwork depending on the island (passports, electrical adapters, etc.).

3. Forgetting the impact of the climate on decorations and beauty

💐 If you live locally: You know that heat and humidity can be challenging, but have you thought about their impact on your decorations? Some flowers wilt quickly, and the wind can be a real challenge for outdoor decor. Opt for elements suited to the local climate.

💐 If you’re coming from afar: Makeup that smudges, hair that doesn't hold, or candles that blow out with the slightest breeze—these details can quickly become frustrating. Trust local professionals who know the conditions and choose long-lasting products.

4. Ignoring administrative formalities

📁 If you live locally: A civil wedding at the town hall is a simple formality to complete. If you also want a religious ceremony, it’s possible, but you'll need to follow local conditions based on your faith.

📁 If you’re coming from afar: You’ll likely need to get married in your home country before holding a symbolic ceremony on the island.

If you're French, you must marry civilly before you leave, either at the town hall of your home, your residence, or your parents' town hall.

For those from other countries, it's generally necessary to marry in your home country before traveling. However, some consulates and certain French overseas territories like Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthélemy allow foreigners to have civil weddings.

For those marrying in Sint Maarten (the Dutch side), the process is more complex—you’ll need to apply on-site and wait a few days for approval.

In any case, it’s essential to research the required documents and timelines to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

5. Not taking advantage of the exceptional setting

🌴 If you live locally: This is the perfect opportunity to rediscover the places you live near every day through a fresh perspective and elevate them for your wedding. Plan a ceremony at sunset, a magical dinner under the stars, or a beachside brunch—give this familiar setting a special touch for your big day.

🌴 If you’re coming from afar: A wedding in the Caribbean is a unique experience! Take advantage of it by organizing activities before or after the big day: a boat trip, exploring the local cuisine, or hosting an after-wedding beach party. You’ll create unforgettable memories.
